Antisana Volcano

Location and Elevation

The Antisana Volcano is located in the province of Napo, within the Antisana Ecological Reserve. It is in the Andes Mountains, two hours from Quito. This enormous volcano is 5,758 meters high and has a base of 14 kilometers, making it the fourth-highest peak in Ecuador. It is estimated to be 800,000 years old.

Geological Features

Antisana is a composite, potentially active, glacier-covered stratovolcano. This volcano is recognized mainly by its two peaks: Antisana I, the old and eroded peak, and Antisana II, the young and potentially active peak.

The volcano’s climate is humid, with average highs of 15 °C and very low temperatures of 0°C.

Climbing

Antisana is characterized by four well-defined and differentiated summits: the Maximum Summit, the Northeast Summit, the East Summit, and the South Summit.

Due to access restrictions and technical requirements, this ascent of Antisana is only recommended for climbers with experience and developed technical skills.

Please note that to access and climb any of the Antisana climbing routes, a prior access permit issued by the Ministry of Environment and Drinking Water is required.

Hiking

If you prefer hiking, within the Antisana Ecological Reserve, there is a vast expanse of moorland, with 120,000 hectares perfect for various outdoor activities in the company of nature. In this park, hiking is allowed, and the most famous route is El Condor, where it will be several days of walking, but you will have spectacular scenery, and with a bit of luck, you will see the giant bird of the Andes, the Condor, hence the name of this route. Camping, sport fishing, and biking are also allowed.

There are two main attractions within this place: the Páramo de las Almohadillas, which receives this name because its plants are so tightly packed that they form a kind of pillow, and the Laguna La Mica, which is of glacial origin and is located at the foot of the Antisana Volcano. Today, it is the dam of the Municipality of Potable Water of Quito, as it supplies water to a quarter of Quito’s population.

 Wildlife and Ecosystem

The Antisana Ecological Reserve has a tremendous floristic diversity, closely related to the wide altitudinal range of the protected area.

In the high zone between 3,100 and 4,700 meters above sea level, herbaceous and shrubby vegetation predominates. Cedar, walnut, wax laurel, movement, myrtle, and palm trees can be found.

It is also home to significant populations of mammals characteristic of the Ecuadorian Andes, such as the spectacled bear, the puma, the Andean tapir, and the páramo deer. These mammals, some of which are endangered, find a suitable and safe habitat in this protected area for their populations. The reserve plays a crucial role in the conservation of these species.

Cotopaxi Volcano

Location and Elevation

Cotopaxi is located in the Eastern Cordillera of the Ecuadorian Andes, approximately 50 kilometers south of Quito, the country’s capital.

This iconic volcano rises 5,897 meters (19,347 feet) above sea level, making it the second-highest peak in Ecuador, second only to Chimborazo.

This remarkable elevation and its privileged location in the Ecuadorian Andes make Cotopaxi a favorite destination for mountaineers, climbers, and nature lovers worldwide who seek challenges and dreamlike landscapes at high altitudes.

Geological Features

Cotopaxi is a stratovolcano or composite volcano formed by alternating lava, ash, and solid rock layers. On clear days, it can be observed from the city of Quito. It is snow-capped almost precisely like a cone and covered with snow and ice, which makes it unique and striking.

The area’s temperatures usually range from 19°C in January to 20°C in July. The months with the highest rainfall are October, November, and March. However, the best times to visit Cotopaxi are the summer months, such as June, July, and August.

Climbing

Although the ascent route to Cotopaxi could be more technical, previous training in glacier crossing is required. Climbers must use specialized equipment such as gaiters, crampons, ice axes, helmets, and ropes to traverse the glacial terrain.

The ascent begins early in the morning to take advantage of the best snow and ice conditions. It usually takes 5 to 7 hours to climb to the summit and 3 hours to descend. From the summit, you can enjoy impressive views highlighting the spectacular ice cap that covers the volcano and the lagoon inside the crater.
