The History of Casa Gangotena

1. The Historical Significance of San Francisco Plaza
Casa Gangotena is nestled in Quito’s Old Town, specifically at the southwest corner of San Francisco Plaza. This plaza has a rich history tracing back to the Incas. As Spanish chroniclers recorded, during the 15th century, it was surrounded by temples and palaces. Notably, a temple once stood where Casa Gangotena is now. The plaza later became a significant market (“Tianguiz”) spot for indigenous traders in the subsequent centuries.

The San Francisco Plaza’s significance during the Colonial era attracted affluent families to build their homes around it. The site where the hotel now stands was once a mansion that housed several presidents from the Republican era. However, a devastating fire in 1914 razed much of this majestic mansion.

After the fire, in 1924, the remnants of the mansion were rebuilt by its owners, the Gangotenas – a prominent family in the capital known for its lineage of industrialists, politicians, and scholars. The Gangotena family maintained ownership until the mid-2000s when Metropolitan Touring acquired it with a vision to transform it into a premium boutique hotel.
In 1978, Quito’s Old Town earned the honor of being the first city designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its expansive and well-maintained historic center. Later, Casa Gangotena was added to the city’s esteemed cultural heritage inventory.
Don’t miss the chance to visit our third-floor terrace. From there, you can marvel at the panoramic views of majestic mountains and volcanoes while pondering the deep historical significance of San Francisco Plaza and its neighboring churches and locales.
